What is the SiL Subject Test?
The SiL Subject Test is a carefully designed British-based assessment that evaluates students’ proficiency in key subject areas. The test is developed by graduates from the University of Oxford’s Department of Education and is aligned with the National Curriculum for England while incorporating advanced questions to distinguish high achievers.
Who designed the SiL Tests?
The test has been created by a team of Oxford University graduates, with expertise in language education and assessment. The chief test designer holds a Master’s degree from Oxford’s Department of Education, is a Qualified Teacher (QTS) with extensive teaching experience both in the UK and internationally, and is also a TEDx speaker on Reflective Teaching.
Who marks the SiL Tests?
Unlike automated grading systems, all our SiL Tests are hand-marked by our team of specialists, which consists largely of current students and graduates from Oxford and Cambridge (Oxbridge). This ensures precise, thoughtful, and fair assessment, focusing on student understanding rather than just correct answers.
What age groups can take the SiL Tests?
At this stage, the test is open to students aged 15 or below, with age-appropriate questions tailored to their respective curriculum levels. The assessment is designed to challenge students while maintaining accessibility. There are 9 levels available for each subject test entry: starting from SiL Level 1 all the way to SiL Level 9.
How is the test structured?
For the SiL English Subject Test, the test consists of three key sections:
- Reading (16 points) – Evaluates comprehension skills, including inference and critical thinking.
- Grammar (17 points) – Assesses sentence structure, syntax, and accurate use of language.
- Vocabulary (7 points) – Tests word knowledge, contextual usage, and precise expression.
As for the SiL STEM series Test, the total score remains to be 40, while the question types may vary across subject and age groups. Please refer to the Sample Papers for more details.
Registration & Administration
How can my child participate in the test?
Parents can register their children through participating schools or approved national coordinators in their respective countries. If your child’s school is not hosting the test, you may check with your local education provider for test availability.
Can schools register to host the test?
Yes, schools are welcome to register to become official test centres (which refer to as Hosting Schools). Hosting schools will receive comprehensive guidelines, materials, and logistical support to ensure smooth administration.
Our team is actively trying to reach out to schools across the world, and in case your school hasn’t received an invite from us just yet but is interested in joining as a hosting school, please contact us directly for further details, at Hi@SharingisLearning.com. Alternatively, you can reach out to our partnering National Coordinator of your own country, their contacts can be found here.
What is the Test Fee?
For the test fee of Direct School Entry / Entry via National Coordinator, please check it with the schools or the National Coordinator of your region.
**For students in the UK, a 20% VAT has to be added to the fee**
How is the test conducted? Is it being held online?
The SiL Subject Tests are primarily paper-and-pencil based, ensuring that students engage with the test in a traditional and focused manner. This format also captures their handwriting, which is carefully reviewed as part of the assessment.
We also provide online version of the test upon request from the schools/National Coordinators, to accommodate the needs of the participating students.
The test is administered by the participating schools or national coordinators under strict examination conditions. Test administrators & the invigilators must ensure fair conduct, vigilant monitoring, and accurate handling of test materials.
Results & Certification
When will the results be released?
Results are typically released within 6 to 8 weeks after the end of the whole hosting phase. Each student’s performance is carefully reviewed to ensure accuracy and fairness.
What will students receive after taking the test?
Every student will receive:
- A Certificate of Participation
- A Detailed Result Slip, which includes:
- A breakdown of their answers with the corresponding language aspects assessed.
- A summary of their strengths and areas for improvement.
(Hosting schools will also receive a comprehensive report, highlighting the overall performance of students across year levels, along with key trends and recommendations for future learning strategies)
Can the SiL test scores be appealed?
Yes. If a school or parent believes there has been an error in marking, a written review request can be submitted within 14 days of receiving the results. An appeal fee may apply.
